Glory Days
Glory days is a group of works commonly found these days to describe an athletes past. It's rare that in modern times we talk about a scientist or sailors glory days. This is why I find it extremely important to talk about this man, Columbus, and the things he accomplished.
Growing up with something told to you and then trying to prove it wrong was not common in Columbus's time. It isn't that common in this modern day time period either. Columbus grew up getting told things like the Earth is flat, theres only one way to near countries, etc. Imagine what Christopher felt going into the great unknown and not knowing wether or not the Earth was round. He ended up not having his glory days go to discovery, but to knowledge. His glory is knowledge because he was a son of a weaver and became the most well know sailor in history. This really leaves a mark on people, as it did on me.
Columbus today is in some forms the hero of Americans for what he did. He sailed across the longest stretch of water on earth. He also survived sicknesses that hit the boats from winter, fish, common cold, and small pox. This is the a true example for the ultimate pursuer. He in his mind believed he had accomplished what he dreamed to do and thats the same mind set he gave to people. That is why he is such a great leader. He gave his crew faith that they could persevere and in the end it paid off.
Columbus was also the father of 2 sons. The youngest one, Ferdinand Columbus, became a Spanish bibliographer and cosmographer. The eldest son, Diego Columbus, on the other hand became a Portuguese navigator and explorer. He served as the 2nd Admiral of the Indies, 2nd Viceroy of the Indies and 3rd Governor of the Indies. This shows that he was also a leader in his family, which was different but also in ways important to that society and it's needs.
